Astronomy

Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year!

This website will provide you with all you need to be successful during the school year. Browse, look around, and feel free to contact me if you cannot find what you are looking for. The site is continuously updated, and is a great way to get ahead for upcoming units.
*This a semester course

Welcome to Astronomy!! This year we will focus on digging deeper on concepts that may be familiar with already. This course should help you consider and solve questions about the world above you. My hope is that you become true experts in the mysteries of the universe and never forget to look up!

We will be using Starry Night software in the classroom that will serve as a fully independent learning tool that will be supplemented by in-class instruction, field trips, speakers, projects, etc.

This is a non-regents class, no lab requirements or topics we have to cover. This allows us to really explore astronomy and find topics that are interesting to you.

TOPICS:

v  Moon
v  Sun
v  Stars
v  Constellations
v  Galaxies
v  Planets
v  Satellites and Exoplanets
v  Black Holes

GRADING POLICY:
TYWLS of Astoria has adopted the online outcome based grading system JumpRope. Students and parents/caregivers can login at anytime to examine their daughter’s progress in any class at https://app.jumpro.pe/parent#school=TYWLS. Each outcome will receive of rating of not-yet, meeting standards or exceeding standards. The evidence that each student produces will determine the rating for each outcome. This evidence can be in the form of homework, quizzes, tests, projects and daily class participation. Multiple pieces of evidence will be collected for each outcome to adequately assess mastery of the material.

SOFTWARE:
We will be using an software called Starry Night. It is a state of the art projection software designed to let the user feel that are truly interacting with space! Unfortunately this is by license only, and can only be accessed on certain computers in the school. Only under exceptional circumstances will a student be able to access the program at home.

PARENT/GUARDIAN INFORMATION:
I’ve created a web site that hosts lots of important information that will be updated throughout the year at ericasclassroom.com. The website will be revised and changed as the year progresses.

CONTACT INFORMATION:
If any parent/caregiver needs to contact me, he/she may call TYWLS and leave a message. I can also be reached at Erica@tywls-astoria.org. I check my email often and will reply promptly. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Please refer to this information during the year to make sure that you are doing all you can to improve your knowledge of mathematics. I’m looking forward to a productive year!
